About the Program
Where Every Hockey Journey Begins

The first step to playing hockey is learning to skate. This 8-week program, offered by NH Selects, is a beginner's ice skating program designed for players who have not yet mastered their skating skills. It is built to prepare young skaters who wish to pursue hockey.

Each session runs once per week with 6 sessions offered throughout the year, giving families flexibility to join at a time that works for them. Whether your child has never stepped on ice or needs to strengthen their fundamentals, this is where they start.

Skaters are placed into the appropriate level based on their current ability. Not sure which level? We'll help assess your child at the first session.

Beginner
25 Min Lesson
Very little to no skating ability

What Your Skater Needs

No hockey gear is required for this program. Keep it simple — here's what to bring.

Helmet HECC certified hockey helmet or bike helmet. Required for all skaters.
Ice Skates Skaters must have their own ice skates. Hockey or figure skates are both acceptable.
Warm Clothing Mittens or gloves, water-repellent pants, and a jacket or snowsuit.
No Hockey Gear Needed Full gear will be part of the Learn to Play Hockey program once your skater graduates from Learn to Skate.

Learn to Skate FAQ
Does my child need skating experience?
No. The Beginner level is designed for kids with very little to no skating ability. We start from scratch.
How do I know which level is right?
If your child has never skated or is still unsteady on the ice, start at Beginner. If they can skate forward comfortably and stop on their own, they may be ready for Intermediate. We'll help assess at the first session.
Can my child move up during a session?
If a skater demonstrates the skills needed for the next level, our coaches can recommend a move up within the same session.
What happens after Learn to Skate?
Once a skater has successfully completed the program, they move into Learn to Play Hockey where they'll begin using full gear and learning puck skills, eventually feeding into our 8U Selects Development program.
How much does it cost?
$225 per 8-week session. This covers all on-ice instruction for the session.
Where are sessions held?
Location will be announced as each session opens. Check back here or join our interest list to be notified first.
Do I need to buy hockey equipment?
No. Hockey gear is not necessary for Learn to Skate. Your child just needs a helmet, skates, and warm clothing. Gear requirements begin at the Learn to Play Hockey stage.

LTS - Session 1

This is where it all starts. Our Learn to Skate program is an 8-week introduction to ice skating for kids ages 8 and under — no experience necessary. Whether your child has never stepped on ice or just needs to build confidence, our coaches will meet them where they are.

Skaters are placed into one of two levels based on ability: Beginner (25-minute group lesson) or Intermediate (50-minute group lesson). No hockey gear is required — just a helmet, skates, and warm clothing.

Sessions run once per week for 8 weeks. Six sessions are offered throughout the year so your family can join at the time that works best. Graduates of the program move into our Learn to Play Hockey program, the next step on the NH Selects development pathway.
